here's the link for #36
http://goodcomics.blogspot.com/2006/02/comic-book-urban-legends-revealed-36.html
Here's a fun urban legend that I've heard (I know it's not true, but it's still fun). Uncanny X-Men #137 was not approved bt the Comics Code becuase Jean Grey commits suicide.
I discovered this yesterday (March 2, '06), thanks to a link on Fred Hembeck's blog, and posted a few comments. Came back today to see if there's been any response, and noticed how old the last batch of urban legends was. So old that I doubt if anyone's gone into any of the items lately. (On proofreading this, that struck me as something that somebody might take as criticism or sarcasm or some such. Please believe me, nothing but an observation of the situation was intended.) On the one about Bruce Banner's first name getting messed up by Stan Lee, somebody mentioned the "David" usage in the 1977-82 TV version, which brought to my mind another comics-related urban legend: The late '70s Saturday morning Fantastic Four cartoons by the Depatie/Freleng company (their last work, if memory serves) replaced the Human Torch with a robot named H.E.R.B.I.E.--true enough--out of fear that kids would set themselves afire attempting to emulate Ol' Hothead. In a circa 1990 interview for the "Amazing Heroes" magazine, Doug Wildey claimed to be part of the decision (but he had worked for Hanna-Barbera of the 60s version, not D-F), and John Byrne did a story using that concept during his run as FF writer/artist, but it is just not true. The rights were licensed out as part of the same deal that spawned the aforementioned Hulk series, as well as a Spider-Man series, two Captain America movie/pilots, and one with Dr. Strange. The budget wasn't big enough for the effects the producers needed, so the project was scrapped. Another character that didn't get past development then was Sub-Mariner, because a show called "The Man From Atlantis" got on the air. Ironically, Marvel made a comic version of THAT!
Ted, I actually tried to e-mail you yesterday to let you know that I HAVE been reading your responses to the older entries, and it's been good stuff.
However, the available e-mail (an aol one) did not work, so, well, I was unable to contact you. So I suppose I might as well tell you here. Thanks for the comments, and don't worry, I'm always catching up to see if anyone responded recently.
As for the HERBIE one, I actually featured that one already. It was in #16.
But, please, always feel free to drop me some good urban legends. I'm always looking for new ones!
Feel free to e-mail me as well, cronb01@aol.com
Brian'
There must be a typo in that email address you posted here, as I've tried to write you twice and had it bounced back as a delivery failure both times. The second time, I changed what I had read as the numeral "one" to the lower case letter "L," but the only difference was that it took about ten minutes to come back instead of doing so immediately, which the first one did. Please do something. Thanks.
The letters cronb, then the numbers 01 and then @aol.com.
Has that been what you were using?
Urban legend suggestion: Actually, I don't know that this qualifies as an U.L. or just a mystery, since I've never encountered a suggestion that anybody else suspects it, but I've wondered about this ever since the underlying event happened in the mid-70s. At that time, DC instituted a new policy, prohibiting an editor from writing for his own comics. They even changed the job title, with "Story Editor," if memory serves. It didn't last long, and was history when Roy Thomas arrived from Marvel (Gerry Conway also edited his Firestorm revival, Fury of....). As the new policy went into effect, the first issue of Kobra was published, a comic created, plotted and pencilled by Jack Kirby, but admitted to have been reworked by scripter Martin Pasko, with the artwork retouched, by Pablo Marcos, I think. The question: Was the new rule motivated by a desire to get rid of Kirby, who was essentially running his own company out of his studio, and putting out comics that the vast majority thereof suffered from poor sales and quick cancellations (in those pre-direct-distribution-to-comic-shops days)? Please note that no disrespect whatsoever to the King on my part is intended by the above theorizing.
Here's a strange aside to the "Bruce/David Banner" issue. Back in the mid-1980's, when I was about 16, I went to see Stan Lee speak at Western Illinois University in (very small) Macomb, Ill. It was a great show, and Lee was a friendly and energetic speaker, kindly suffering many fans who came up to him with reams of stuff to sign, shaking hands, cracking jokes, and generally being a very fun guy to watch, at least if you were a Marvel-crazed teenager like my younger self.
One thing that changed the mood of the evening, however, was a disscussion of film & TV adaptions of Marvel comics. Lee railed with genuine anger about the then-in-pre-production Cannon Films "Spider-Man" movie, urging the audience not to go see it (It was never made. The same idiots, however, did finish their obscene "Captain America" movie. Yes, the one where Cap has rubber ears). He also claimed the mercifully brief "Spider-Man" TV show was a very humiliating experience for him. He was hired as a on-set consultant, only to have all of his advice angrily ignored or laughed at, with the crew dissmissing him as just a "Comic book person".
The strangest revelation, however, concerned the "Hulk" TV show. Lee said it felt it was probably the best Marvel adaptation, but felt it had been hampered by network Standards and Practices censors.
The weirdest S&P demand concerned the name of the Hulk's alter ego: Lee claimed the network would not let them use the name "Bruce" because, Lee claimed, they felt the name had "Homosexual connotations"! Lee was utterly flabergasted by this, as any sane person would be, but it was an issue the network refused to budge on, so the change was made.
It's definitely something I've tried to look into, Richard. I, for one, just don't buy someone giving that as an official reason - it's just SO offensive. The other explanation has it that the name "Bruce Banner" was deemed stupid because of the alliteration. I have been trying to get a good answer on this one for awhile. Look for it! :)
Well, at least now I know how the "Bruce [Banner] is a gay name" story got started, but I stand by my statement posted on the CBUL edition with the specific "Bruce/Robert-Bruce" item on it that TV "Hulk" developer/executive producer Kenneth Johnson was on the public record at the time as changing it because of the alliteration. I think it was his interview in Marvel's "The Hulk!" color magazine of the time (which started out as a b&w called "The Rampaging Hulk"), but it might have been an article in either TV Guide or a newspaper's entertainment section. I suppose Johnson's statement COULD have been PR CYA, but, of the two claims, that one makes much more sense in the first place.
Mentioning that mag reminds me of something: It was announced in the letter column there that Howard Chaykin had prepared a knockout finale for his Dominic Fortune series running in its back pages, but color was dropped from the mag, they consequently couldn't do his art justice, and didn't print the story. (As I recall, the editor never said another word about the situation, nor published a letter asking about it, for whatever that might be worth.) That piece struck me as a prime candidate for presentation in "Marvel Fanfare," but never appeared there, either. Does anybody know if it has ever been published, if so where, and if not why not? I mean, Marvel certainly has made subsequent use of the character, arguing against some legal dispute with Howie being in the way, unless rights to the specific story/pages of art is the issue. I ask again, anybody know something?
i would think black+white would be better repesentative of someone's artwork...?
Two points:
1) Re: the Hulk's name, I recall a Mad parody of the TV show in which the same point was made -- Banner asks why his name has changed and some other character says it's because "Bruce" isn't manly enough -- while on a TV in the background Bruce Jenner is winning the Olympic marathon.
2) A possible UL: I recall hearing/reading somewhere that you can tell which early Marvel characters Stan Lee scripted himself, and which he farmed out to his brother Larry, by whether or not they have the famous alliterative initials. I may have read something about it in the '70s hardcover ORIGINS OF THE SUPERHEROES but I don't have a copy handy.
Great blog!

Okay, here's one that's not too much of an urban legend, but it's hard to find definitive proof of it (apologies if you've heard this before)

I missed the first post you did on this but is so creepy to know that Mark Gruenwald's ashes are in the ink of a comic book somewhere... that is just creepy... and so cool at the same time
I read that Superman comic in the Holocaust, and i quite see the places where the story could have been very tough to handle for young readers.

How come there hasn't been a new entry in 5 years? This collumn is great. I found it through a link on Wikipedia about Mantis. Surely, there've been enough new comic book urban legends in the last five years to support a new once monthly collumn. Here's a question I have:
Whatever happened to the comic book 'Hepcats'. The original issues were being reprinted in the 90's, supposedly in preparation for a continuation of the series. But the new issues never came. Also, the creator, to my knowledge, has never been heard from in the comics industry again. What happened to him and why weren't the new 'Hepcats' issues published?
Good blog! I genuinely love how it is easy on my eyes as well as the details are well written. I am wondering how I can be notified whenever a new post has been made. I have subscribed to your rss feed which must do the trick! Have a nice day!
