Judging (Marvel's June) Books By Their Covers
Marvel's June Solicitations are up, so let's make some prejudgements based just on the covers (as we all love to make prejudgements, don't we?).
Let's begin!
___________________________________________________
Anyone a bit frightened to ask where Greg Land got the photo reference for Johnny Storm for this cover?
Yeah, me too.
___________________________________________________
VERY cool Ultimates cover.
Although
A. It's a shot we've seen a million times before
and
B. Spidey's feet look bizarre.
___________________________________________________
Ben Oliver is a heckuva find for Marvel.
They should steal a few more DC artists. It really works for them.
___________________________________________________
Dell'Otto Annihilation Covers!!!
Woah!!
Something DIFFERENT!! I love it!
Good job on this Nova cover.
However, on this Ronan cover...
Right back to the dark, dark covers. Not a fan.
But wait!
Check it out! Something different!
Sweet!
But oh wait...
Darn you, Dell'Otto!!
___________________________________________________
Very clever Astonishing X-Men cover from John Cassaday.
I'm not totally digging the facial work, but the IDEA is impeccable.
___________________________________________________
Here's what I think happened with this cover...
"Hey, Joe! Do you want some reference material for the Black Panther and Storm?"
"Nah, I'm pretty sure I remember how to draw them."
Weeks go by.
(Joe thinks to himself) "Oh crap, what does the Black Panther look like under that mask!?!? I need reference material! It's too late! It's too late! Oh no, I'll just have to wing it!!")
___________________________________________________
Nice cover.
But hasn't it been done a few times before?
___________________________________________________
This is a damn fine cover by Epting for Captain America.
In a weaker month, I think this would be top five easily. However, this was a strong cover month.
___________________________________________________
YES!
Citizen V!
You can do it, Fabian!!
You can bring back Sprocket!! Midnight's Fire!! Ooooh...how about the Bengal!!! I know you can do it!!
___________________________________________________
Gotta give it up, that's a pretty badass Daredevil cover.
___________________________________________________
Meanwhile, this is just a plain bad Daughters of the Dragon cover.
___________________________________________________
Pretty nice piece of John Romita Jr. artwork, I'm not sure if it works as a COVER, though.
This variant cover is listed as being by him, as well. That's surprising.
That's certainly a different look for him.
___________________________________________________
I like Casey Jones, but I'm not loving this Exiles cover.
___________________________________________________
I love the ballsiness of this homage.
"Yes, again.
We're doing it again.
What? You gotta problem wit dat?!?!"
___________________________________________________
CIVIL WAR!!!!!!!!!!!!!
One of the more obvious cover concepts, but sometimes, things are obvious because they WORK, ya know?
And this concept works.
___________________________________________________
Soooo....
How long before Sally Floyd is retroactively inserted into every past story, a la Jessica Jones?
___________________________________________________
OH MAN!!
I wish I knew what was under that black box!!
Oh?
That's the trade dress?
Never mind.
___________________________________________________
I warn you...
I will riot if there is not a scene in the comic where Cap and Iron Man re-enact that cover scene!
___________________________________________________
You just KNOW that Cap's not wearing any pants on this cover!!
Also, Chaykin? Nice pull, Marvel.
___________________________________________________
Offhand...
can you recall an uglier looking Iron Man drawing?
___________________________________________________
While not a bad X-Factor cover...
it also isn't exactly thrilling, ya know?
___________________________________________________
I swear, I have been waiting about twenty years for this.
Wolverine versus Nitro! FINALLY!!!!!
___________________________________________________
I gotta say, I love Chris Weston's work...
but I'm not loving this "standing around" cover.
___________________________________________________
Is that seriously supposed to look like Nick Fury?
Seriously?
___________________________________________________
Man, now Iron Man is recruiting for the Army!
You KNOW there is an enlistment problem now!!
___________________________________________________
Pretty good job by Mike Deodato on this New Avengers cover.
___________________________________________________
I would say this Ms. Marvel cover was "smoking"...
...but I know there's a ban on that at Marvel.
___________________________________________________
I'm not usually a fan of that over-detailed style of art...
but I think it really works here on David Finch's Moon Knight cover.
___________________________________________________
Phil Hester is a good fill-in for the Ron Frenz rule.
And man, does it show that the new Spidey costume fails the Ron Frenz Rule of Costume Design.
It's no "Alien Armor War Machine," but it is in the same ballpark.
___________________________________________________
I like the CONCEPT of this Marvel Adventures cover...
...but I don't think the threat of a bunch of tiny lizards really comes through on a cover.
___________________________________________________
Very nice Marvel Adventures Avengers cover by Aaron Lopresti.
I can't wait until the Marvel Adventures continuity becomes a problem...hehe...
___________________________________________________
GREAT cover concept by Eric Powell.
Very funny cover for this Two-Gun Kid one-shot, but some of the details just don't feel right, like Two-Gun Kid's face, for one.
___________________________________________________
One of the more obvious cover ideas (for Last Planet Standing)...
...but I think it works.
___________________________________________________
I don't know whose responsibility it is, Paco Medina or the editor...
but SOMEone has got to start putting "after ___" on the cover of these homage covers.
That being said, that's some fine work by Paco Medina. I can hardly recognize his work.
___________________________________________________
I would pay five bucks to see Warren Ellis' reaction after seeing Pete Wisdom on this cover.
Yee-ikes.
___________________________________________________
Here's how I imagine this going...
"Tim, you want me to do WHAT?
Stick my tongue out?
This is for a comic book cover?"
Ah...photo reference jokes...my bread and butter.
___________________________________________________
Answer: The cover to Sensational Spider-Man #27
Question: What is an eyesore?
___________________________________________________
Isn't this the cutest damned thing you've seen in a long time?
Awwww...
___________________________________________________
I like it...I foresee a return to the classic costume for the 100th issue finale.
___________________________________________________
C'mon, Gary Frank!!
You gotta give us SOMEthing more for a Squadron Supreme cover!
SOMEthing!
___________________________________________________
The day has finally come.
Somebody is about to be killed by hype.
He's hitting her with the announcement to Storm and Black Panther's wedding!!!!
___________________________________________________
This is a pretty cool Young Avengers cover by Jim Cheung.
___________________________________________________
Man, if I'm bored reading it, can you imagine how bored Gene Ha is to do covers for X-Men: The End?
It shows.
___________________________________________________
Surprisingly, with the extensive amount of stripmining that has been done with Frank Miller's work, there has been little done with Nuke.
So this is not even "AGAIN with the revisiting Frank Miller's work?" territory.
___________________________________________________
Just when you thought Gambit couldn't get any lamer...
we get Horseman Gambit.
Yee-ikes.
___________________________________________________
This Corben cover to the Marvel Horror: Edgar Allen Poe series gets an honorable mention for top five covers of the month.
Strong cover...but a bit too little for a full cover.
___________________________________________________
TOP FIVE COVERS!!
___________________________________________________
5. I don't know why there is a comic book just for variations of fairy tales using X-Men characters, but if you're GONNA do something like that...use Kyle Baker!
Wow. What a great piece of work by Baker.
___________________________________________________
4. The absurd nature of this Stuart Immonen cover for Nextwave #6 perfectly captures the spirit of Nextwave.
Which is craziness.
___________________________________________________
3. Question.
Have the Champions EVER looked as good as they do on this Ryan Sook Giant-Size Hulk cover?
___________________________________________________
2. Gotta give it up to Andrea DiVito.
This Thing cover is funny, while also being filled with so much awesome detail. GREAT cover.
___________________________________________________
1. I think this may be the best cover I have ever seen by Mark Bagley.
Ever.
Anyone have a Mark Bagley cover they think is better than this one?
This is the closest I can think of offhand...
___________________________________________________
Well, that's it for this month!

Well, that's it for this month!
Feel free to weigh in with your prejudices (and your top five covers)!
28 Comments:
The Captain America cover and the Iron Man one are the standouts for me. I was really disappointed by that Ultimates shot. Spidey and Wolverine both looks pretty bad.
You can just tell that Cap, on that Thing cover, is thinking "I can't believe I went out before the fucking Prowler."
Yep, a great month for Marvel covers. For June, they far surpass the DC work.
I have a far different top 5 though, well, other than The Thing. Love the poker cover, love the Lockjaw in the corner.
Remaining top 5 covers:
Cap- you hit it right, that should be in the top 5,
Moon Knight- history 101 right there, in a nutshell
The Poe cover- though small, damn its slick
FF: Civil War- you will be disappointed cuz I'm betting there won't be Cap v. Iron Man in that ish. I really like the Sue vs. Reed part though. It fascinates me for some reason.
As a comment on the "have you seen a worse Iron Man" -- yes I have- just look at any panel in his new ongoing- trash his armor, and his origin. Randy= not a Warren Ellis fan. Or the House of M Battletech armor.
The Gurihiru Power Pack/Spidey cover is a homage to a JRjr cover from early on in Straczynski's run.
And the Chaykin Cap looks like he's either about to start crying or chuck his guts.
"Consarn it! Old Glory's back ta front! I'm about fit ta be tied!"
Hm. And is that stupid-arse X-Fairy Tales cover supposed to be a GON homage? Probably not.
//\Oo/\\
A Phil-Hester rule of costume design doesn't work, since Hester is incapable of making anything look good. Honestly, Spider-Man's new costume isn't that complicated, even if it is ugly. At least he's kept on books I don't read.
Also, what's up with that guy's neck on the Wolverine cover by Ramos.
That Wolverine/Nitro cover has to get recognition as one of the worst drawings of all time. That's Ramos, right? I've never been a fan, but that's about as butt-ugly as you can get. What's up with Nitro's neck? Why has he turned into Giraffe-Man????
And I like the Stars of David on the Moon Knight cover. Good attention to detail.
D'oh! T. was two minutes quicker than I was. But at least we think alike.
Wow, that Thing cover is awesome. When was the last time Stingray made it onto the cover of anything?
* "Anyone a bit frightened to ask where Greg Land got the photo reference for Johnny Storm for this cover?"
I'm gonna go with a Sammy Haggar concert shot.
* Am I the only one that thinks it's Cap that looks off in that Ultimates cover?
* The Finch DD cover is nice, but that truly feels like an image I've seen a million times.
* Speaking of Finch, Moon Knight really is the perfect character for him since he'll never have to draw his face. Nice cover.
* I'm really groovin' on that Marvel Adventures Avengers cover by Lopresti, even if the Spider-Man shot is a bit lewd.
* Are Wolverine and Nuke fighting mid-air? On the edge of the cliff? Why the sword if you have claws? And is Quesada looking more and more like Bart Sears while Bart Sears is looking less and less like Bart Sears? What's up with that?
* Love that Bagley cover - can we do away with the colored side bars on the Ultimate titles yet, Marvel? That would have been a nice full cover shot.
Re: Worse looking Iron Man?
Oh, that's FAR from the worst I've ever seen him.
I submit to you the names Keron Grant and Mike Grell.
::weeps::
THAT was some bad-looking Iron Man.
But yeah, I'm not a fan of the current look either, which tends to make him look like a lobster.
Wow, has Marvel finally given up the "nothing but lame pinups" look for covers? That would be awesome.
Nextwave continues to be my favorite. I would totally buy Dirk Anger's drugs.
I'm coming to the conclusion that I really need to start reading The Thing.
On Miller's "Nuke" character, I think he only really looks good in Mazzuchelli's style, which makes the flag tattoo look really iconic, not (as is more or less the case here) just like a tattoo.
Is that really supposed to be Nick Fury in the army duds? Looks more like Frank Castle to me.
Romita didn't do the main cover for Eternals - that was Rick Berry (according to the solicits). Just an FYI.
Mad props for pointing out how great that New Warriors cover is. You ask me, they're wasting Bagley's time on Ult Spidey.
You know you've been out of Marvel comics for a while when Black Goliath pops up in a major crossover.
Why don't we ever get DC covers too? They had some doozies in this same Previews. Or do they not post them online as conveniently?
