And the "Worst Costume of 2006 Award" goes to...
... the All-New Atom.
Mein gott.
Of course, I don't know why we need a new Atom. It's not like the old one was doing anything.

i agree.
Wow.
The drawing OF the costume was pretty good...but damn. That IS one ugly costume design.
Agreed.
I mean, we lost Ray Palmer for that?
At the risk of sounding like my criticism is "too many notes," that costume is FAR too busy. Lose the belt and backpack-thingie (did the new Atom rip off Gear from the Static cartoon) and the color switch at the waistline and this thing wouldn't be bad at all.
It still wouldn't be as good as Ray Palmer's costume, of course, but DC seems to need to mess up Gil Kane's designs these days, as with the wholly unnecessary tweaking of Hal Jordan's costume.
Decided to take a look at the Byrne board to see if I could find a "what was he thinking" post. He says that it's someone else's design and that he's going to be "tinkering" with it as he goes along. So take that as thou wilt, I suppose.
Never thought I would see a design worse than the new Spider-Man costume so quickly though... wow.
Guess you haven't seen the Ion suit, JR.
But, yeah, the new Atom suit is awful. Is he smuggling doubloons on his back? What the hell is that?
No, I've seen it, I had just blocked it from memory.
But now it's all coming back to me
...every...horrid....little..detail..
Make it stop, please, please make it stop.
It IS a nice drawing by Byrne, but just of an AWFUL design. Good to know it wasn't his design, as he is usually much better at design than that.
Yikes, that was bad.
I dunno,
On that page the writing looks way worse than the costume.
There was writing on the page?
The costume distracted me too much to see any dialogue.
That costume looks like something you could make in City of Heroes.
I like the way it....
Umm.. Well it's nice the part that...
Well, it's not TOTALLY terrible, with the...
I really, really, REALLY want to like this. The Atom's my favorite pure DC Superhero. Can someone fill in the blanks?
Woo, that is naff, but I'm not sure it's worse than Iron-Spider-Boy or Speedball's new grim'n'gritty'n'reallyquitedull costume.
Wow... what is that, the Hunchback of the Microverse?
I also hate the A-shaped design on the front side. Lettershapes are out, no? That errect Triangle on his breast looks pretty dumb, like a arrow pointing directly to his chin, or a icon promoting self-fellation.
*yuck*
That's the Atom? At first I thought it was a new Spider-Man clone. Or the new Ant Man...
I thought the original Atom costume was one of the best in comics. Bold, simple, dramatic, all the stuff a four-color superhero suit should be.
Oh, well. The redesign doesn't strike me as gawdawful. It could be worse. He could have giant shoulderpads and a mohawk.
Whats wrong with her anatomy?
Thats classical.
What's with this new fetish for "appliances" on superheroes' backs? We've had Spider-Man, Blue Beetle, and now the Atom. Any more I'm not thinking of?
Lord help me, I think I'm with Harvey on this one. The belt is too big, yes, but that's easily fixed. As for the backpack, I'm going to give them the benefit of the doubt and assume it serves some plot purpose. Aside from those two elements, the costume is fine.
"Speedball's new grim'n'gritty'n'reallyquitedull costume."
Grim 'n' gritty Speedball.
I'd rather they just kill him.
I don't really have much to add, other then to say that you really have to wonder about the abilities of an artist or an editor who had the god awful idea that this costume was better then the Gil Kane original.

in the grand scheme of things, he still looks like Atom. so it already is not nearly as god awful as the new blue beatle or that iron man spidey suit.
Just sayin' the obvious for the record...
...it's very early days. Relax. ;)

Reminds me oh when they outfitted Moon Knights simple, classic silver outfit with all those gold artifacts and he became the Fist of Konshu.
