Comic Book Urban Legends Minutiae

Two fairly quick points...

1. Recently, I've been hearing some doubt on the veracity of the Steve Ditko cutting board story (Urban Legends Revealed #17). Now, I am all for getting to the truth of the matter, so if someone can verify that Greg Theakston just flat-out lied for whatever reason, then I will gladly change the status from true to false. Heck, I'd enjoy doing it, as it'd give me an easy entry for a future Urban Legends Revealed...hehe. So, please, if someone can give me something that trumps an "on the record" first hand account (and that includes someone showing me that Theakston was lying), I will gladly use it.

2. Someone asked me about this the other day, and I figured it was interesting enough to pose it to y'all. Would you like me to feature "Undetermined" Urban Legends as well? I think literally about half of Snopes' Urban Legend features end up as "Undetermined." So would you like me to do more of those types of Urban Legends? I have plenty of "undetermined" ones lying around that I do not think I have enough to make a good faith claim of true or false, so if people would like me to use them, I don't have any real problem with using them. Personally, I think it sorta defeats the purpose of the feature, but I guess I can see how it might be useful if someone responds to the "undetermined" ones with proof one way or the other. So, since I don't have a strong feeling either way, I'm opening it up to you folks.

  1. While I wouldn't want to see a high ratio of "undetermined" Urban Legends, it might be useful to to them up. It might lead to someone coming forth with information or a lead that might help to clear things up.

  2. I agree. An occasional interesting "undetermined" UL would just fine.

  3. If you gave "undetermined" legends equal coverage, then yes I'd agree with you that it takes away from the point of the article. If you occasionally sprinkled one in? I think that could be a treat.

  4. an undetermined bumber bonus special?

  5. I'm all for as many of these as you want to do--false, true, undetermined, what have you. This is a terrifically fun gig.

  6. I love love the undetermined. I like hering about Legends that I did not know existed. I have a question for you. Has Arnold Drake ever said if he had a plan to get Doom Patrol out of their death?

  7. I wouldn't mind the occasional "undetermined" that could never be proven / disproven with information available today. I also wouldn't mind an occasional "undetermined" that was a call to arms to the community for more information.

However I'd rather see True / False determinations. Mostly because the Urban Legends you've come up with I've never heard of, and I'd hate for you to bring up something that wasn't bothering me, only to leave it unresolved.

  8. Maybe the undetermineds could go in a separate series, "Unsolved Comic Mysteries"

  9. One plus to doing unresolved legends is that some of the readers may have access or memory of info that can help you find out the truth once and for all. I agree it shouldn't be overdone, but you might actually find some answers to whether they're true.

  10. One in three unconfirmed wouldn't be bad.

  11. I think it'd be cool to do a couple of special editions of Undetermined stuff. Half the fun of these for me is just getting to hear all the industry folklore and wacky rumors.

  12. I think a special edition featuring undetermined urban legends would be cool.

Throw out some cool points for anyone who can solve them and BAM!, you've got a column and a game.

Either way, I'd like to see some, like Dan, I just get a kick out of reading about the rumours out there.

  13. I'm for the whole unresolved legends thing. Either go with a couple of special editions about these or just add one of them on to the end of each of the usual Urban Legends posts. That way you'd have 3 true or false legends and one unresolved one (per entry).

I like hering about Legends that I did not know existed.
    ...
Mostly because the Urban Legends you've come up with I've never heard of,

Hmm, you know I always thought the thing with urban legends was that people had heard of them and that they were well known. Coming up with a story that no one, or very few people, knew existed doesn't really make it an urban legend.

    Ah well. Nevermind. Carry on...

  14. I'm for including the "Undetermined" urban legends, as long as they don't really take over from the ones that can be demonstrably proven true or false. I also agree with the majority that it'd be better to lean towards the ones that can no longer be confirmed or proven false, or towards ones that have a notable body of conflicting evidence, over the "fishing expeditions." I believe that's the way Snopes normally does their UL posts as well.

  15. I would love to read some undetermined urban legends.

    ReplyDelete
  16. would love to see some undetermineds, though like others, I'd recommend they become their own special installments in the ongoing series, and not just part of the regular columns. great stuff all round, by the way.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Yeah, Dan's "special edition" idea is probably the best way to go.

Some good ideas out there, folks!

  18. Here's a vote for Jon H.'s "Unsolved Comic Mysteries," but only every now and then, not too often at all.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Even though these responses are overwhelmingly positive, they seem to boil down to "a special once in awhile" or "1 undetermined plus 3 regular ones". I'm starting to think people are just being nice because they love the usual segment so much. "I Really love this idea! But how about in tiny bits?"

  20. Go with the occasional undetermined, simply because it may inspire some other piece of information to come your way that could confrim or deny it.
