Current Comics Report for 5/18

This is a report about what I think about the comics of this week, based upon Diamond's Shipping This Week list, as reprinted below, with my (sometimes quite snarky, so be forewarned) comments.

Certain sections of the Current Report on the 5/18 Comic Book Week contain forward-looking statements that are based on my expectations, estimates, projections and assumptions. Words such as “expect,” “anticipate,” “plan,” “believe,” “estimate” and variations of these words and similar expressions are intended to identify forward-looking statements, which include but are not limited to projections of books being good, writing performance, character flaws, artistic coolness and continued title stability.

Forward-looking statements are made pursuant to the safe harbor provisions of the Prognasticators Reform Act of 1995, as amended. These statements are not guarantees of future performance and involve certain risks and uncertainties, which are difficult to predict. Therefore, actual future results and trends may differ materially from what is forecast in forward-looking statements due to a variety of factors, including, without limitation:
  • A book being better than I thought it would be;

  • A different creative team on a book;

  • A different type of story than I thought it was;

  • Differences in anticipated and actual performance by the writer and/or artist
All forward-looking statements speak only as of the date of this report or, in the case of any document incorporated by reference, the date of that document.All subsequent written and oral forward-looking statements attributable to me are qualified by the cautionary statements in this section..

I estimate that this will be super cool.

DEC040063 KOTOBUKIYA YODA SOFT VINYL MODEL KIT $44.99

Now, ya see, THIS I don't have a real problem with. I mean, if some dude really loves Yoda, then by all means, go out and get a $45 Yoda thing.

Just a rumor.

Is this late? I think it is.

MAR051886 TOXIN #2 (OF 6) $2.99

About ROBIN #138:

"Willingham is slowly but steadily building a Rogue's Galley for Robin. Can anyone remember a writer being more brazen about creating a Rogue's Gallery?"

Yep. Chuck Dixon's run of Nightwing introduced all sorts of forgettable rogues for Nightwing, including a guy with his head twisted backwards, twin acrobatic thiefs, a street punk, and stupid hackers wearing even stupider costumes. Oh, and Lady Vic, too.

In fact, the whole Robin: Year One mini-series was just a set up for a lame Nightwing villain. When Willingham gets a four issues prestige format series to introduce a crappy Robin villain, then he will have matched Dixon.

Sigh, it saddens me that people think Dixon's run on Nightwing was good. Though, in relation to Grayson's run, it was fricking Shakespeare.

Olympus per Ninth Art:

"Harryhausen's influence on Guice's portrayal of the Greek myths is obvious. The story, by G---- J---- and Kris Gimmenger, tells of a team of archaeology students and mercenaries trapped on Mount Olympus, who discover than the myths are real. It certainly sounds like it belongs in the late 60s era of stop-motion monster movies. And I mean that in the best possible way."

http://www.ninthart.com/display.php?article=1044

They also provide a link to preview pages that they find encouraging. Note that all the students are cute and will apparently spend the whole story running about in swimwear. Good thing they brought mercenaries.

Livewires has actually been fun.

I hope so, but I fear the trial may be over already. There's certainly no good way to reach a verdict in the space remaining. I'm gonna miss this storyline when it's over, because it guaranteed me something to write about each month.

Fortunately, I looked over Copperhead's trial in #1 the other day, and it provided plenty of material.

HA! It's funny because... Well.. because Geoff Johns bores the crap outta me 98% of the time, and Darwyn Cooke is goodgoodgood.

I love me some Cooke art, too. And I sleep through some Johns stories. This was a dumb, predictable little schmaltz, but it was pretty. Cooke as Kane and Cooke as "modern" was a little too . . .knowing for me, though.

Yeah, Cooke was nice, and I thought the exact thing about the different styles of art.

A bit over the top.

And the story, as expected, was booooooooring.

And hey, as a bonus, the Secret Files DID come with a story that was originally printed in Wizard, so that's value, right?

"Secret Files - Where to go for material we threw into magazines seven months ago for free!"
