Judging (Marvel's March) Books By Their Covers

Marvel's March Solicitations are up, so let's make some prejudgements based just on the covers (as we all love to make prejudgements, don't we?).

Let's begin!
___________________________________________________

This is a major improvement over last month's cover...

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

Very striking piece by Peterson.
___________________________________________________

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

Who do you think gets lightboxed for the Super Skrull?

Imagine if he actually DREW that! Wouldn't that be a pip?
___________________________________________________

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

Now we know why Bagley is not drawing Ultimate X-Men.
___________________________________________________

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

Notice that Rogue and Iceman started getting serious AFTER she absorbed Gambit.

Something latent there, no?
___________________________________________________

OMIGOD!

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

The Shadow Thieves are invading the Marvel Universe, too!!!
___________________________________________________

I don't get it.

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

How are they disguising Spider-Man's costume on ONE cover, but on this other book, he has the same old costume?
___________________________________________________

Not a fan of this Byron Penaranda cover, but...

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

it sounds like they are going to let Tania Del Rio redo Araña. That is grand news!

I just hope it does not involve totems in any way, shape or manner.
___________________________________________________

Isn't it funny that, if you were to go by Spider-Girl...

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

...you would think that the Clone Saga was, like, the single most important event in Spider-Man history.
___________________________________________________

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

Awwwwwwwwwwww....
___________________________________________________

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

You ever hear the story about how David Finch came to draw Spider-Man's eyes like this?

He just picked up a copy of Marvel Knights: Spider-Man, and thought that that was just how it was done.

I love that story.
___________________________________________________

Here's what I think happened...

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

Marvel thought Oeming wanted to do an adaptation of the Nic Cage film, God of War, but he actually wanted to do a book about Ares, God of War.

Gotta pay attention to what you greenlight, Marvel!!
___________________________________________________

I don't know if this works as a cover, but it is a cool image.

Image hosted by Photobucket.com
___________________________________________________

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

..............

Really?

Really?

You're gonna kill off Foggy freakin' Nelson?

Really?

You sure?

Really?

Cool cover, though.
___________________________________________________

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

Someone should tell Tony Harris that he doesn't have to follow the photo reference THAT closely.
___________________________________________________

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

Remember when Gulacy was awesome?
___________________________________________________

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

I just love the implication from this cover that, in his search for a wife, the married wife of his friend Reed Richards is still a possibility.
___________________________________________________

Doesn't this cover look just like it stepped out of, like, 1994?

Image hosted by Photobucket.com
___________________________________________________

It is funny...

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

This cover is JUST bordering on the edge of goofy, but Andrews has pulled it off.
___________________________________________________

Wow.

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

That is a lot of characters I don't care about.

Does the fish lady even have a name?
___________________________________________________

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

I can see Ben Affleck as Nova.

Nova is the deep core driller of this comic book.
___________________________________________________

I love it...the 65th Anniversary.

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

Comics should be ballsier than that, even.

We should have, like, "Celebrating 43 Years of Spider-Man!"
___________________________________________________

That's a pretty badass cover.

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

I love how it, like, makes SENSE for Doom to build statues of himself.
___________________________________________________

I am ashamed.

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

I actually mistook Khari Evans for Khary Randolph.

Don't hate me.
___________________________________________________

No WONDER the rocket crashed!!!

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

It was being piloted by Moe Howard!
___________________________________________________

Wait a sec...I see Scorpion....but...

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

NO FRED VAN LENTE ON THIS COMIC!!!
___________________________________________________

That is one sweet redesign on Ghost.

Image hosted by Photobucket.com
___________________________________________________

I like how this is like an homage to that cover of Iron Man tearing through the wall.

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

Only, like, to the EXTREME!
___________________________________________________

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

"QUICK! Overwhelm him with a mountain of suck!"
___________________________________________________

Geez louise.

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

It is like Ms. Marvel just had a horrible, disfiguring accident.
___________________________________________________

Nise poses.

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

I think Xavier is giving us Magnum.

Strange is going with Blue Steel.
___________________________________________________

Big dropoff from last month's cover.

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

Still a nice cover.
___________________________________________________

Similar sentiment to this month's Marcos Martin cover for Runaways.

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

Has someone given Martin an exclusive yet?!?!
___________________________________________________

Hehe.

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

It's like he's not even trying.

He basically looked like he cropped a shot of a dude onto the body of Starfox. It doesn't even look like it matches the rest of the drawing.
___________________________________________________

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

In this issue, we learn how Jewel was involved in Secret Wars, the Siege on Avengers Mansion, the Kree/Skrull War and...let's say....the moon landing.
___________________________________________________

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

How is this the same artist who drew last month's hideous cover? This one is actually pretty good!
___________________________________________________

Yes...that IS a bunch of characters on a cover.

Image hosted by Photobucket.com
___________________________________________________

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

This costume could really use some bubbles around her waist.
___________________________________________________

Really nice depiction of the city around him.

Image hosted by Photobucket.com
___________________________________________________

I have no idea what Cheung was thinking when he sat down to design this cover.

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

It is such an odd concept design.
___________________________________________________

Spider-Man looks oddly fat.

Image hosted by Photobucket.com
___________________________________________________

Pretty cool drawing.

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

I do not remember any of them, though. I think a lot of the New Universe's appeal is nostalgia.
___________________________________________________

Very nice, understated drawing by Kirk. Impressive job.

Image hosted by Photobucket.com
___________________________________________________

Wow.

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

JRjr did a great job of replicating his old style for this cover!

Well, either that or he just reused some old art.

Wouldn't that be hilarious?
___________________________________________________

Very cool Ladronn cover.

Image hosted by Photobucket.com
___________________________________________________

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

I didn't even realize at first that this was Immonen.
___________________________________________________

Was Cable vs. Apocalypse EVER cool?

Image hosted by Photobucket.com
___________________________________________________

Yep.

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

They ARE standing there.

Next to each other.

This is true.
___________________________________________________

Here, too.

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

They ARE standing there.

Stunning.
___________________________________________________

VERY clever cover idea by Brooks.

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

Well done.
___________________________________________________

This is a REALLY nice drawing of Siryn by Sook.

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

But I do not think that it works as a cover.
___________________________________________________

Yes, please.

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

Please revisit Storm's origin.

That's what we all need.
___________________________________________________

Not exactly great design work here.

Image hosted by Photobucket.com
___________________________________________________

Have they left ANYthing untouched from Age of Apocalypse?

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

First X-Man, Holocaust, Dark Beast and Sugar Man.

Then Blink and Morph.

Now even the Sunfire!

Wolverine better watch his hands!!
___________________________________________________

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

Are we supposed to know this person?
___________________________________________________

I WOULD say this was a cool cover...

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

...but then I realized that it was Apocalypse and Dracula.

So I realized that it wasn't.
___________________________________________________

Sean Chen should never be allowed to design a costume ever again.

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

Yikes.
___________________________________________________

I think Tim Bradstreet Punisher covers are sorta like colorforms.

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

Take one Punisher standing up with gun and place it on a picture of sharks.

Take one Punisher turned to the side with shotgun and place it on a picture of mobsters.

Etc.

Etc.
___________________________________________________

This is a very nice tradedress design by Oeming. Even if it is not original...hehe.

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

Well done.
___________________________________________________

MY TOP FIVE COVERS OF THE MONTH!!!
___________________________________________________

5. This is a very strong cover image by Allred.

Image hosted by Photobucket.com
___________________________________________________

4. I love how Epting's covers for this title all look like they could be movie posters.

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

And COOL movie posters at that.
___________________________________________________

3. I don't know WHAT this is propaganda for.

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

But I support it.

Damn your effectiveness, Juan Doe!!!
___________________________________________________

2. See, now THIS homage cover is at least FUNNY!

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

That makes all the difference.
__________________________________________________

1. This is just the must creepily awesome thing ever.

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

Even more so when you remember that this is Quicksilver's daughter on the cover!
___________________________________________________

Okay, that's it for me, folks!

Feel free to share YOUR prejudices!!

AND your top five choices!

It looks like She-Hulk is trying to push Starfox through the judge's bench- and he's pretty happy about it.

Wow- I don't recognize a whole bunch of characters from these covers. Who's that red & blue bird guy, and what is that cover for?

Re: The Powers cover.

That reminds me, I need to grab that Blade Runner DVD at Wal*Mart while it's $3.88.

Cheung was thinking, "How come other artists can draw faces that occasionally look different?"

Seriously. Pick up any Young Avengers and grab a panel at random. If not for hair and coloring, EVERY DAMN FACE is the exact same.

Just going by covers alone, and based on only the past couple months here for analysis, DC is kicking Marvel's ass when it comes to covers. There's little here that's very memorable or striking.

The Epting Cap cover is great, though, probably my favorite of the bunch.

"I think Tim Bradstreet Punisher covers are sorta like colorforms."

Heh. It's funny because it's true....

Wow. When I read the Daredevil solicit, I thought, "Something shocking? Eh, they'll probably just kill Foggy Nelson. No, wait, that's just retarded."

More fool I.

(Also, on that cover, it looks like the tombstone reads "Faggy Nelson."

Is that Silver Surfer? With wings?

Also, if that's Marvel Zombies, I notice it now has the Ultimate trade dress that the first issue lacked. I thought it should have been published under the Ultimate banner, and was quite surprised when it wasn't.

How are they disguising Spider-Man's costume on ONE cover, but on this other book, he has the same old costume?
Misdirection, my dear boy. The wearer of the Spidey costume isn't Spidey. The Luchador is the post-Other Spidey. Isn't he EXtREME!?

Is that a Not Avengers cover? With Doctor Doom on it? But he's like a real villain! How will the team cope with that?

I just love the implication from this cover that, in his search for a wife, that the married wife of his friend Reed Richards is still a possibility.
What's good for one superhero king is good for another superhero king...

I notice that one of Panther's possibilities is yet another Shadow Thief.

Oh look, a "Wolverine looking through his claws" cover! It's been a good two months since we had one of those!

As for Ben-Affleck-Nova, that part of Countdown to Infinite Annihilation Crisis has a pretty good creative team attached (Abnett/Lanning/Walker), so I may look in on that.

Love that Doom statue cover, especially the photo-op kids. Doom's kissing a baby! Ha!

So, hang on. Scorpion is Doc Samson's daughter?

I know Ms Marvel (I prefer Warbird, sorry) was a member of the US Air Force, but is there really any significance to the US flag on her cover, or is it just cheap-shot imagery? I mean, she doesn't jump out as a particularly nationalistic hero.

Why does Doc Strange have a bionic arm and a scythe coming out of his head?

GAH! UGLY SHE-HULK COVER! EYES BLEEDING!

Cage has had a really weird smile on the past few Pulse covers. Can someone with unbreakable skin get Botox?

Yeah, that Young Avengers cover is one montage too far.

Are we supposed to know this person?
This is a Marvel goof, I think. This is the guy (I think) who's been blacked out on the other Genesis covers, but his identity hasn't been revealed yet, except here it is. Although I must admit, I have no idea why they were keeping it a secret if we can't recognise him anyway.

Are Marvel aware that Coppola's Dracula isn't the only one? They do know that they themselves used to publish a very popular iteration of the character?

Doesn't Quicksilver's daughter like eggs for breakfast?

My favourites are the Ladronn cover (Morrison & Ladronn, Thor, NOW!) and that Epting Captain America cover.

Seriously. Pick up any Young Avengers and grab a panel at random. If not for hair and coloring, EVERY DAMN FACE is the exact same.
True enough, but the same is true of David Finch and (insane) people seem to like his work, so...

Next, you'll be telling me that Black Cat (a Catwoman homage, natch) will be appearing in Moon Knight: The Bottom.
Oh god, I'd forgotten about The Bottom. Hahahahahahahaha. Oh my. Smile on my face the rest of the day now. Thanks Matthew Craig!

"Creepily awesome" or not, when did Pietro become Stretch Armstrong?

Also, on that Harris FF cover, has no one noticed that Sue's sitting smack-dab on Reed's crotch? Gives a whole other notion of what's going on there, doesn't it?

12/15/2005 03:27:00 PM
Blogger Brian Cronin said...

First off, sadly enough, the Finch cover is for an issue of Spider-Man Unlimited.

The New Avengers cannot face Doom, sillies!!

Also, yeah, how BAD was this month's covers from Marvel!?!? DC destroyed them. Utterly destroyed them. I had to stretch just to get five covers this month.

DC had seven REALLY good ones, plus plenty of others I probably could have stretched to accept.

On that "Apocalypse vs. Dracula" cover, it looks like Apocalypse has down syndrome.

My first impression at seeing the Quicksilver cover: "Why is he trying to feed his daughter a giant sperm?"

I like how Reed's smiling as he wraps his arm around the Super-Skrull.

I'd accept the Wolverine's-claw's-reflection as non-goofy if Cap weren't giving such a "It's so big!" look.

Gosh. Ms Marvel is really... thick.

Is that the new Blue Beetle crossing over into Runaways?

When did Cage's reference become Jamie Foxx?

That New Universe thing with the hawk-guy... Is that a Captain Planet rip-off?

I remember when they first showed the cover with the mystery X-man of the past face-to-face with Cyclops, head bathed in shadow. I saw that Silvestri was doing the art, and I thought, "Would anyone even know who this was supposed to be if we COULD see his face?" Guess I got my answer.

For a second I thought that the Allred cover meant Harry Potter was going to show up. And then I thought, waitaminnit, before Harry Potter had the scar, there was... Oh, and this IS Allred drawing... And I peed myself with glee at the thought. But then I remembered the whole Princess Di thing and realized the chances of that actually happening. But then I remembered the Invincible/Spidey (I do it just for Byrne)crossover and I thought, well maybe...

Point is, I want Madman.

So, pipe-wing Silver Surfer is from Ultimate Extinction, not Marvel Zombies, as I'd thought.

So, the surfboard is too silly for the Ultimate universe, but a character called "Silver Surfer" without a surfboard is what? Mild surrealism?

Well. Thanks to the wonder of photoreference, I know Stacie Harris's body better than most of my ex-girlfriends'.

Someone should put Tony Harris and Robert Crumb in a cage and make them fight for the love of a Thick But Beautiful Woman.

The winner? Either way, probably not the Thick But Beautiful Woman.

5. Statue of Doomity
4. Dead Girl
3. Captain America 65th Anniversary Thing
2. Tony Harris Presents... Mr. Fantastic and the Thick But Beautiful Etc.
1. Marvel Zombies

Sorry about the brief "No Cover" status, folks.

But it was either "Wait 2 1/2 hours for the photos to show up again" or "Reload each photo into a new hosting account."

And I think the latter was just a BIT too much work for the negative of having to go without photos for a couple of hours...hehe.

Starfox is clearly wearing the head of one of the Baldwin actors.

I especially like the detail in the Doom cover where there is a tiny statue of some other schmuck being pulled down next to the enormous Doom statue. Plus the baby-kissing.
