Chats Should Be Good - Elliot S! Maggin
I was just recently talking about him, so it is especially fun to announce an Elliot S! Maggin chat this Sunday at Comic Book Resources.
Elliot S! Maggin was one of the main Superman writers (they more or less alternated writer on the two books) from 1971 until John Byrne took over the title in 1986.
In that span, he wrote many very good Superman stories, including the three-part epic where Clark and Superman broke into two people, and we got to see Lois and Clark explore a relationship together that was VERY similar to the relationship they eventually DID start years and years later.
Plus the aforementioned story where the Guardians question if Superman is hurting the development of Earth. And another classic Green Lantern story, which told the story of what if Kal-El became a Green Lantern.
These are just a sampling of the many cool stories he wrote over the years, and you can feel free to discuss them with him at the chat Sunday!
If you are already a member of CBR, then you just have to hit "Comic Chat," and then hit "vBChat Room Change" and choose to join the room marked "Elliot S! Maggin Chat."
If you are NOT already a member of CBR, you just have have to register, which is no big deal, as it's free. Just click here to register.
I hope some of you make it! Harvey showed up too late for Steve, but hopefully he can make it for Elliot!

Curses. I'm going to be gone on Sunday.
But thanks for arranging it anyway, Brian. Elliot is an amazing writer.
Is it common knowledge already, or would it be rude to ask why his middle initial is "S!"?
Wow. I'm sorely tempted.
It's public knowledge. Once he wrote his name with the exclamation point by accident. Editor Julius Schwartz loved it and said that from here on out, "Elliot S. Maggin" would be "Elliot S! Maggin."
Also, old-timey comic printing wasn't great, and periods sometimes disappeared. Part of the reason old comics used so many exclamation points was to make sure you could see the punctuation. Thus, Maggin had an extra reason to use the exclamation point.
Maggin was the writer for Superman in the seventies. To be honest, when I think of the character, I picture him as the team of Maggin and Curt Swan portrayed him.
Maggin and Swan's Superman is the definitive take on the character to me, aided in no small part by the fact that I read Miracle Monday to tatters as a kid. I loved the fact that their Superman enjoyed his powers and had a weird sense of humor and actually had fun every once in a while.
It was a fun chat.
