Is it go time between me and Rucka?

So I'm flipping through OMAC today (please don't ask me why) and some weird robot thing (or whatever the hell those things are) shoots Fire and says something like "target terminated." Then Guy takes her to the hospital. Is she dead? Can anyone help me? Let me tell you, if Rucka and his evil little cohorts at DC killed Beatriz, there's gonna be some ass-whupping, I tells ya!

Okay, not really. I love Beatriz, but she is, after all, fictional. I just can't believe that Rucka and Winnick and Johns are decimating the DCU like this. In my mind, killing characters is LAZY-ASS WRITING. It's like, "Well, we can't figure out a way to make this OMAC thing interesting at all, and no one is really emotionally interested in the crap-ass story we're telling, so let's kill someone." That's poor writing. That's - how shall I put it? - SHIT WRITING.

I didn't buy it, by the way. Fire dying or surviving will have absolutely no effect on my daily life. I was just curious. Go read Whiteout and its sequel. Rucka really does know how to write.*

* Yes, I know I used the word "ass" a lot in this post. Forgive me - it just seemed appropriate.

I don't like things that suck.

Whiteout and Queen & Country are both outstanding, Greg- go look in the mirror.

Lot of crappy writing out there from DC today. JSA Classified ending where they plugged the upcoming Crisis, Batman book with its crappy revelation and the Superman book showing that DC is now officially the Big Blue Girl Scout. God he's such a wuss, now. Can we get a non-pinko on Superman, PLEASE!? This is as bad as when Loeb had Supes doing therapy for post-traumatic stress disorder.

And read my blog: johnnytriangles.blogspot.com. Yes, I spam now.

Look in the mirror? I don't understand. I haven't read Q & C (just never got around to it), but I mentioned that Whiteout is good in the post. I also liked most of Rucka's Detective run. I know he's a good writer. That's why this penchant for knocking people off bothers me.

I can always count on T. to stir the pot!

Jesus, we've really got it up the arse with spammers, don't we?

Anyway... they're offing Fire, too? They already offed Sue and Ted and Rocket Red! And Crimson Fox, years ago.

I just bought a handful of awesome old JLs today. Now I will weep tears of blood.

Oh god, it's Scourge isn't it? It's just Scourge again. Only robotic, and with a mohawk.

Justice is served. :/

Not only is it a writing cop-out ... it's losing effect with each use.

Beetle got offed just seconds before OMAC starts. Max gets offed in (essentially) OMAC 3.5. Red Rocket got offed ... didn't he?

"didn't he"? Listen to me: I'm losing track of the corpses.

I have nothing to spam. Sorry.

It's gotten to the point where it's no longer irritating, but hilarious. Probably not what Rucka was going for, but pathos turns into bathos so easily. I hope Booster and Fire bite it soon to make way for the zombie JLI revival in 52*.

I would totally buy a zombie JLI revival. Weekly. Daily, if it came to that.

Yeah, I know his first name. Am I responsible for all Gregs in the world???? Such a heavy burden!!!

Zombie JLI. Me like.

You know, even the way he writes Wonder Woman, that scene in the beginning of AoS rang utterly, utterly false. But since Rucka seems to be hugely hung up on characters killing, it happens anyway. I think Diana would have at least said "I'm sorry, Kal, it was the only way." But no, "She just snapped his neck like that." That's right, Superman, girls are icky.

ANd Sasha turns into a robot.

Please, anyone who still thinks Rucka really cares about female treatment in comics, and that continually abusing Sasha, Fire, the Native, et al is his way of correcting the Women in Refrigerators culture, e-mail at DanCSM99@aol.com, 'cause I don't get it.

By this point I find it impossible to care anymore about what happens or who dies. I just stand there in my Local Comic Shop and flip through the various tie-ins (why? I think its because I hate myself.) then pick up something enjoyable rather then DCs latest purge book.

I don't understand why everyone is copping out here: "Rucka does know how to write". Sorry, I've picked up and read a few of his novels and they are terrible.
DC's hiring of this guy is really turning me away from comics permanently. Most of what's coming out from DC is awful and it's really putting me off comics as an artform. Unlike most people who post here I suppose, I don't care for indie comics or anything from companies outside the big two. When I pick up a comic I want to read a story about a hero. Comics to me seem like an exciting place for that simple reason: that they're about heroes. It's a simple, optimistic reason to like them, but that's why I put my money down.Otherwise I just can't be bothered.
Greg Rucka, Geoff Johns, almost DC's entire staff are not writing stories that contain any aspects of anything I would call heroism. Infinite Crisis is not an epic, it's not a morality tale, it's just a real orgy of imaginary blood. I will not endorse any man responsible for putting it together.
Comics Should Be Good. These aren't. Spend your money in other places.

In response to "Anonymous" post directly above me, I totally agree. It's not a morality tale but an exercise of moral relativism. The villains exist now not to be defeated by good but solely as plot devices to bring out the moral grey areas of the heroes. In Countdown one of the biggest ironies I found was that Johnuckanick use ever opportunity to tell you over and over that the "A-list" heroes were so incredibly heroic, but make no effort to SHOW you their heroism through their actions. Show, don't tell.

I also agree that I don't understand why Rucka's always called such a great writer. I find him amateurish personally. Brubaker is a little too obsessed with the moral grey area of heroes too, but at least his skill level makes it palatable.

In 20 years, some up-and-coming writer who's now a kid reading DC's new line of all-snuff comics will kick of a big crossover event with the graphic rape and murder of the by-then obscure and dimly remembered Stargirl character, and when that happens, it will be hard not to jump up and down going "neener neener neener."

Oh, DC Comics will be around forever, even if it's just as two or three Superman and Batman comics for licensing purposes and wacky nostalgia.

And, dammit, Zombie JLI *would* be good.

Jeph Loeb did Zombie Justice League in Superman/Batman, and it DID kick ass!

Granted, it was drawn by Carlos Pachecho, which is kinda cheating...but still!

DC will be around in 20 years. They'll just wipe the continuity slate clean and outsource the comics work to Japan.

At this point, Zombie JLI will consist of a flip-top-headed Max lugging around Rocket Red's helmet with the Blue Beetle's ashes in it.

It would be AMAZING.

Funny you mention Dead Alive when Sue died pregnant.

Either the Dibnyspawn picks a horrible, yet hilarious fight with somebody, or else I ain't buying.

I've never seen "dead alive".

I was thinking that the JLI decides "Hey, we're dead, let's go rescue Ice from Hell!"

Once there, they find out Ice doesn't actually want to go, but the Devil wants them to take her.

Hillarity ensues, "Ransom of Red Cheif" style!

She's not really in Hell anymore, though--Etrigan said if anybody looked back, she's off to Valhalla where she belongs. Zombies in Valhalla, now, that's even better.

You should watch Dead Alive. Peter Jackson zombie madness. Featuring the most awesome priest in the world.
