Hey, look, everybody! It's Ambush Bug!

(I have no point of this post. I just figured our readership needed some frivolity. Don't get me wrong, the comments are very good and interesting, but before we go from figuratively rending each other limb from limb to literally rending each other limb from limb over a movie, we should all look to Ambush Bug! Just as some things divide us, some things - like Ambush Bug - bring us together. Right? Right?

This is from Ambush Bug Nothing Special by Giffen, Fleming, Gordon, Sprouse, and Wray from 1992. Damn it's funny. If you ever see it in the back issue boxes, pick it up. You will laugh. Hard.)

  1. I think the Wachowski brothers completely missed the point of the original. No wonder Keith Giffen wanted his name taken off it. Making Lobo an analog of President Bush and having Ambush Bug and Cheeks in a romantic relationship completely ignores the complexities of the source material.

  2. Wow. Why, why I say, have I never been introduced to the goodness which is Ambush Bug?

  4. Huh. I thought the Bug was strictly an 80's creature. Seeing him with Sandman there is like seeing Michael Jackson circa 1982 with Trent Resnor...circa 1992, I guess.
I've read the old Substitute Legion issue with Ambush Bug many, many times, yet have never read his regular, erratic series. They don't seem to just be floating around to be had, like a lot of books from that period.

  5. Evil Cronin made the panel all small! It's tough to read now. Boo Evil Cronin! It wasn't me, I swear!

  6. The bug is the best! Ambush Bug, come back and bring your arch-memisis arrgh-yle the sock with you.

my apologies if I spelled the sock's name incorrectly.

  7. I got all of Ambush Bug's solo stuff off eBay. It's wonderfully bizarre. My favorite character is Julie Schwartz's floating head.

  8. The bigger version of the panel was getting cut off by the side panels!

So I shrunk it, but all you have to do is click on the image to see the full-sized image!

    Yay!

And as for Ambush Bug, not only does he rule, but when I recently did a bit on Snark Free about comics that I love, and where I picked one single issue to encapsulate the coolness of each title, this issue was my pick for Ambush Bug.

    What a great comic.

But please, Keith Giffen, if you ever bring back Ambush Bug, do it with someone else scripting you! The horror that was Giffen-scripted Ambush Bug in the Lobo mini-series from a couple of years ago still has a stain of badness upon my soul.

  9. Giffen has Ambush Bug lined up to appear in *52, doesn't he?

i'm interesting in seeing how that plays out, considering that the *52 preview pages i've seen so far look incredibly grim and angst-ridden (i think some character even has a gun in his mouth on page 2).

  10. "You've got your very own CALL FROM AL!! And . . . you're STUCK!!"

    I heart Ambush.

  11. I think that Son of Ambush Bug #3 is one of the greatest achievements of 20th century literature. I read and reread that comic so many times that -- to quote the Bug writing about his favorite issue of Lois Lane -- "I still have my copy, but it's now in liquid form."

Love the Nothing Special too, of course, except perhaps for the Beauty and the Beast parody segment, which, if memory serves (am too lazy to get up and check), was not by Giffen/Fleming. I remember laughing out loud at the sheer nonsensical glory of battling word balloons going "Ninja! Wonder! NINJA! WONDER!"

Also quoted this Sandman 'audition' sequence here, in a brief post on sidekicks. Someday, I will find some excuse to quote the Doom Patrol sequence too. Or maybe I don't need an excuse.

  12. Man, I miss the Bug. Heard a rumor somewhere in a Q&A that he MIGHT figure in "52" somehow, wonder how that might work?

  14. That joke seems a little bit to pushed to actually work out, but it somehow does work out. I will pick it up if I ever come across it in the CBS.
